We assessed the population dynamics of two key species of mixed forests in northern Patagonia (Austrocedrus chilensis and Nothofagus dombeyi) under two silvopastoral use intensities (high vs. low). Fieldwork was carried out in 3 estates located in the “Comarca Andina del Paralelo 42°”, Río Negro province, Argentina. On each estate, the areas with the highest and lowest silvopastoral use intensity (SUI) were selected, excluding opened pasturelands. This selection was based on landowner references on land use, visual assessment of the browsing status of understory vegetation, feces abundance, and evidence of forest harvesting (stumps, markings, and canopy opening). In each of these areas, 4 permanent 10 m × 10 m plots were placed, inside which 3 permanent 2 m × 2 m subplots were delimited to monitoring natural tree regeneration (seedlings, saplings and recruits). Every tree (height ≥ 130 cm) of A. chilensis and N. dombeyi within each plot and every sapling (height < 130 cm) in each subplot were surveyed. Each individual was identified with a numbered tag during the first autumn and was monitored for three consecutive years (May 2018- May 2021). For all of them, height (cm) and diameter (cm) were measured; for trees, the diameter was measured at breast height (DBH, 1.30 m above ground). Each subsequent autumn survival was recorded and measurements of height and diameter were repeated in living individuals. In addition, new individuals established during the last growing season were identified and numbered (recruits). Individuals of each species were grouped into four classes according to their sizes. Seedlings and saplings (height < 130 cm) were divided into two classes: 1- initial regeneration (R1, high < 10 cm) and 2- advanced regeneration (R2, height 10-130 cm). Secondly, the trees (height ≥ 130 cm) were divided in: 3- juveniles (J, DBH < 5 cm) and 4- adults (A, DBH > 5 cm). Additionally, four seed traps (individual area of 0.08 m2) within each plot were hung at 1.80 m from the ground between adult trees (96 traps total). The seed collection took place between April and May of 2019 and 2020, after the seed production pulse. In the laboratory, A. chilensis and N. dombeyi seeds were manually separated from leaf litter using tweezers and weighed on a 0.001g precision scale.es_ES
