Resumen: The Colorado-Desaguadero River system is the largest basin entirely contained within Argentina. The basin is within the South American Arid Diagonal. The river originates in the northern Argentine Andes, and after covering approximately 1800 km, it flows into the Atlantic Ocean in northern Patagonia. The Colorado River system extends across various geological provinces, encompassing seven ecoregions, from La Puna to the Patagonian steppe. The river discharge attains its peak between November and March, primarily driven by the snow melt in the Andes. Due to its extensive latitudinal and altitudinal range, the basin’s rivers exhibit a rich and diverse variety of amphibians, fish, and aquatic invertebrates, including several endemic species. The river and its tributaries play a fundamental economic role as a water source in this extensive arid region of Argentina.
