Resumen: | Urban mobility is a fundamental component of everyday life in cities. The use of public transportation requires, sometimes, long times, independently of the distance to be covered, due to the design of the system. It is fundamental to improve it to guarantee an efficient flow of activities in the city. The fact is that modern urban networks have been built around the use of cars, a form of transportation that hinders the development of other means of transportation. The overwhelming prevalence of private automobiles has created several problems, such as environmental degradation, accidents, congestion, and lack of accessibility. In this regard, Public Transport Systems can help to mitigate several of these problems. An efficient system of public transportation may help to promote a reduced use of private cars, mitigating the problems caused by them. Also, the authorities can design special tariff prices subjected to economic subsidies for needed citizens to increase accessibility to efficient mobility, a policy that is difficult to implement in the case of private transportation providers.Despite the benefits of public transport, PublicTransport Planning has always been a tricky issue for authorities. Providing an efficient service that can be simultaneously accessible and reliable has traditionally been themajor goal for authorities. However, in the last decades, citizens have also asked the public system to be environmentally sustainable. Thus, authorities at a local or regional level (which are usually in charge of public urban transport systems) have to confront an increasingly complex problem. The advances in smart technologies and computer-aid tools have also improved the process of gathering and analyzing data for making better decisions. Among the diversemeans of transport that a city might have, the bus is one of themostwidespread since it requires a smaller initial investment and is more flexible than other systems, such as urban trains or subways. In this paper, we present the first steps of a project of optimization of the public bus system of the city of Bahía Blanca. More specifically, we present a procedure to estimate its Origin–Destiny matrix (OD), i.e., an estimation of the demand for mobility around the city. For that, we use the data provided by the smart cards of the users of the system. However, since this informationmay not be completely accurate, certain inferences have to be made by combining it with the assessments of different practitioners and stakeholders of the city in future stages of this investigation. |
