dc.description.abstract | Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world. | es_ES |

dc.description.resumen | Las plantas perennes crean puntos calientes productivos y de biodiversidad, conocidos como islas fértiles, debajo de sus copas. Estos puntos calientes determinan en gran medida la estructura y el funcionamiento de las tierras secas en todo el mundo. A pesar de su ubicuidad, los factores que controlan las islas fértiles en condiciones de pastoreo contrastante por parte del ganado, el uso de la tierra más frecuente en las tierras secas, siguen siendo prácticamente desconocidos. Aquí evaluamos la importancia relativa de la presión de pastoreo y el tipo de herbívoro, el clima y los rasgos funcionales de las plantas en 24 atributos físicos y químicos del suelo que representan indicadores de servicios ecosistémicos clave relacionados con la descomposición, la fertilidad del suelo y la conservación del suelo y el agua. Para ello, realizamos un estudio global estandarizado de 288 parcelas en 88 sitios en 25 países de todo el mundo. Mostramos que la aridez y los rasgos de las plantas son los principales factores asociados con la magnitud de los efectos de las plantas en las islas fértiles en las tierras secas de pastoreo en todo el mundo. La presión de pastoreo tuvo poca influencia en la capacidad de las plantas para sostener las islas fértiles. Los arbustos y pastos más altos y anchos soportaron efectos de isla más fuertes. Los suelos estables y funcionales tendían a estar vinculados a sitios ricos en especies con plantas más altas. En conjunto, nuestros hallazgos disipan la noción de que la presión de pastoreo o el tipo de herbívoro están vinculados a la formación o intensificación de islas fértiles en tierras secas. Más bien, nuestro estudio sugiere que los cambios en la aridez y los procesos que alteran la identidad de las islas y, por lo tanto, los rasgos de las plantas, tendrán efectos marcados en la forma en que las plantas perennes sustentan y mantienen el funcionamiento de las tierras secas en un mundo más árido y pastoreado. | es_ES |
