| dc.description.resumen | This chapter examines IMF’s supposed immunity from human rights law and explores arguments that challenge this stance. It also investigates the causal links between the orthodox economic policies promoted by the IMF and the levels of realization of human rights, especially economic, social, and cultural rights. It also analyses a case study on the mega-loan granted to Argentina by the IMF in 2018, its successive renegotiations, and the impact of these agreements on fiscal space and human rights. Despite IMF’s resistance to acknowledging the close linkage between its operation and human rights, this chapter demonstrates that such recognition has come of age. Accordingly, the IMF should consider the human rights implications of its work to fulfil its mandate in compliance with human rights law. This chapter also provides theoretical arguments and empirical explanation of how IMF’s conditionalities may go hand in hand not just with the violation of economic, social, and cultural rights, but also that of civil and political rights. In some instances, the IMF’s operation is even closely linked to human rights of a peremptory character. | es_ES |
