La dirección de arte en el documental: ambientación cinematográfica y construcción de personajes

Abstract

This document aims to give an account of the process carried out during more than two years for the completion of the Final Degree Project (in ahead TFL), which is the end of my journey through the Bachelor of Design Audiovisual Artistic. This process consisted of two parts, which dialogue with each other and they enrich each other: theoretical research and design process for the production of an audiovisual. Theoretical research is framed in the area of ​​art direction, and specifically, the potentiality of the setting was investigated for convey characteristics of the characters. For Alfonso de Lucas, cinematographic set designer, the scenography has as its primary function the of “determining an environment closely linked to the character and endowing him with a very unique human meaning ”(in Gentile, Díaz, & Ferrari, 2007, p.19). In this way, it could be argued that art direction has a strong narrative potential within the audiovisual, since the different elements that compose it (space, props, costumes, color, texture, etc.) help to generate sense and can provide information about a character or fragments of the story that are not always explicit in action or dialogue. It is this narrative facet of art direction that I found interesting study to later be able to apply it in the making of a documentary, audiovisual expression that is not usually related to art direction. The documentary made, Makers of sounds, is a series (of which present two chapters) on luthería, in which each chapter is a unitary that portrays a luthier. In this way, through research and the design process, I intend demonstrate the importance of the role played by art direction in the construction of meaning, and thus revalue art design in the field of documentary film.
